In a world where access and opportunity can make all the difference, China is leading the way in empowering people with disabilities. Yang Shu, a visually impaired individual, epitomizes the success of these initiatives.
\"I never thought I could pursue a career in audiobook narration until I discovered screen reader software,\" said Yang Shu. Her journey began during a training session organized by the Disabled Persons' Federation, where she found a tool that transformed her life.
Now a full-time audiobook narrator, Yang Shu has recorded approximately 50 novels, delivering both main narration and character voiceovers. \"Many visually impaired people share a similar experience with me,\" she explained. \"From a young age, we tend to be more sensitive to sounds and naturally develop a strong interest in them.\"
\"While sighted people read visually, I rely on auditory reading,\" Yang continued. \"I listen to the screen reader with one ear, then reinterpret what I hear in my own words, bringing the content to life with my emotions.\"
\"I can support myself through my passion. To put it simply, I've turned my 'dream aspiration' into my 'daily bread.'\"
Supporting Yang's story is the Chinese government's comprehensive approach to enhancing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. The General Office of the State Council released a three-year plan in 2022 to promote the employment of persons with disabilities. This ambitious plan aims to create one million new jobs nationwide between 2022 and 2024.
The initiative focuses on unemployed persons with disabilities in both urban and rural areas who are willing and able to work. It emphasizes the government's role in fostering employment by improving job skills, safeguarding employment rights, and nurturing a supportive social environment that encourages understanding, care, and backing for their endeavors.
By turning aspirations into reality, China's commitment is not only transforming individual lives like Yang Shu's but also paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse workforce.
