China's Ministry of Education is set to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) education for its younger generations, preparing them for the rapidly evolving technology landscape.
The ministry emphasizes the importance of cultivating creativity, scientific interest, and digital skills among primary and secondary school students. Schools are encouraged to integrate AI into their curriculums, embed it within routine teaching content, and conduct regular evaluations to ensure effective learning outcomes.
From early primary years, students will gain hands-on experience with AI technologies. As they advance to senior primary and junior high levels, the focus will shift to understanding and applying these technologies. In senior high school, students will engage in AI project creation and explore cutting-edge AI applications, according to the ministry’s circular.
A new AI section will be added to the national smart education platform, aiming to pool quality resources and make them more accessible. Additionally, colleges, universities, research institutes, and high-tech companies will be encouraged to open their AI labs and exhibition halls to primary and secondary school students, providing them with invaluable exposure to real-world AI applications.
Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng described AI as a \"gold key\" for the education system, highlighting its potential to shape the future of education while acknowledging the opportunities and challenges it presents.
In February, 184 schools were selected as pilot bases to explore philosophies, models, and programs in AI education. These pilot programs aim to develop exemplary cases and experiences that can be promoted on a larger scale, with plans to establish more such educational bases in the future.
