Celebrating Diversity: 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities Conclude in Hainan

The 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of China wrapped up on Saturday in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province, marking the end of a vibrant nine-day celebration.

Starting on November 22, the event brought together nearly 7,000 athletes from 35 delegations across China, competing in 18 sports and over 160 demonstration events. These competitions spanned three categories: competitive, skill-based, and comprehensive events, showcasing the rich tapestry of China’s ethnic diversity.

The equestrian events held in July in Zhaosu, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, set the stage for the games in Hainan. This tradition, held nearly every four years since its inception in 1953, emphasizes mass participation and the preservation of traditional sports.

Participants and spectators alike were captivated by popular events such as stilt racing, single bamboo drifting, board-shoe racing, Yajia—a traditional Xizang sport also known as Tibetan tug-of-war—and swing competitions. These events not only provided thrilling competition but also celebrated the cultural heritage of China's various ethnic groups.

Adding a unique local flavor, this year introduced coconut tree climbing, a traditional sport rooted in Hainan's ethnic minority culture. This debut highlighted the region’s distinctive traditions and added a new dimension to the games.

The National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities continue to serve as a vibrant platform for cultural exchange, fostering unity and showcasing the enduring legacy of China’s diverse ethnic communities.
