In a groundbreaking achievement, the world’s first commercial liquefied carbon dioxide (CO₂) carrier was delivered by a Chinese shipbuilding company to an overseas client on Friday in Dalian City, northeast China's Liaoning Province.
The carrier, aptly named Northern Pioneer, was meticulously constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Spanning approximately 130 meters in length and 21.2 meters in width, the vessel boasts the capacity to transport 7,500 cubic meters of liquefied CO₂ in a single trip.
Equipped with liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel technology, the Northern Pioneer meets the most stringent global energy efficiency design standards. This makes it an environmentally friendly, safe, and highly efficient vessel, incorporating international cutting-edge features.
“This ship is the first of its kind in the world,” said Gai Yong, project manager at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., in an interview with China Media Group. “It features a newly developed steel plate material for the cargo tanks and a first-time design and construction of a liquefied cargo system.”
Gai further highlighted that the vessel incorporates multiple energy-saving and environmentally friendly designs, which not only increased the complexity of construction but also set new standards in the carbon transport industry.
