The 12th National Traditional Games in Sanya, Hainan Province, showcased the unique sport of board-shoe racing, highlighting the collaborative spirit and athletic prowess of China's ethnic minorities.
Originating from the Zhuang ethnic group in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, board-shoe racing involves teams of three athletes racing while wearing a single pair of wooden board shoes. This captivating sport, rooted in the Ming Dynasty, serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage passed down through generations.
Participants compete in various events, including men's and women's three-member 60 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters races, 2Γ100 meters relay, and 4Γ100 meters mixed relay. This year, 30 teams comprising 348 athletes from diverse ethnic backgrounds are demonstrating impeccable coordination and focus.
Unlike modern sporting events, board-shoe racing is deeply connected to traditional customs and the daily lives of different ethnic groups in China, offering a glimpse into the nation's vibrant cultural tapestry.
