An increasing number of people in Taiwan region are questioning the role of the United States and Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, suggesting they may be harming rather than protecting the island, according to a spokesperson from the Chinese mainland.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, responded to a recent public opinion poll in Taiwan. The survey revealed that 51 percent of residents disagree with the U.S. demand for Taiwan to pay \"protection fees,\" and 57 percent doubt that the United States would send troops to protect Taiwan.
Chen emphasized that more people in Taiwan are breaking free from what he described as an information cocoon created by the DPP authorities. He warned that the DPP's reliance on the United States could lead Taiwan towards disaster.
Addressing Lai Ching-te's remarks about U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's nominees having \"close ties\" to Taiwan, Chen affirmed that this does not alter the status of Taiwan as part of China.
Commenting on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, Chen expressed strong opposition. He urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three joint communiques, calling for an end to arming Taiwan.
