China has unveiled its comprehensive reports on research hotspots and emerging frontiers for 2024, identifying 125 key areas that have shown significant activity or rapid development over the past year.
Jointly published by the Institutes of Science and Development, the National Science Library under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Clarivate, these reports aim to map global scientific and technological trends, forecast future breakthroughs, and bolster national innovation efforts.
The 2024 Research Fronts report analyzes 13,318 research frontiers from the Essential Science Indicators database, spotlighting 110 active or swiftly advancing hot frontiers and 15 emerging frontiers across 11 integrated disciplines. These disciplines include agricultural sciences, ecology and environmental science, clinical medicine, information science, and more.
In a separate analysis titled 2024 Research Fronts: Active Fields, Leading Countries/Regions, the performance of nations and regions such as China, the U.S., the UK, Germany, France, and Japan is evaluated. The United States leads with 71 frontiers ranked first, representing 56.8% of the total. China follows with 39 frontiers, accounting for 31.2%, while the UK, Germany, and France each secure top rankings in a few fields.
\"The reports show that AI-enabled scientific research, next-generation high-performance communications, future energy, addressing climate change, and improving human health and well-being have become key areas of scientific exploration,\" said Pan Jiaofeng, president of the Institutes of Science and Development.
