Innovative Farmers in Jiangsu Combat Cold Wave to Protect Pitaya Crops

Farmers in the Chinese mainland are braving a significant cold wave this week, as the National Meteorological Center has issued yellow alerts for snowstorms, blizzards, and freezing temperatures. These severe weather conditions have prompted farmers to take proactive measures to safeguard their crucial crops.

In Jiangsu Province, located in eastern China, pitaya farmers have showcased remarkable ingenuity in defending their harvests. With nighttime temperatures plummeting to between 3 and 4 degrees Celsius, greenhouse owners have implemented thermal quilts and deployed 32 diesel heaters to maintain the necessary warmth. Additionally, farmers are leveraging technology by using smartphones to monitor temperature and humidity levels meticulously. This ensures that the pitaya trees are kept within their optimal growing range of 5 to 35 degrees Celsius, protecting them from the harsh cold and preserving the integrity of the produce.
