A growing number of residents in Taiwan are beginning to view the United States as a source of harm rather than protection, according to a spokesperson from the Chinese mainland. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, highlighted these findings on Wednesday in response to a recent public opinion poll.
The survey revealed that 51 percent of respondents disagreed with the U.S. demand for Taiwan to pay \"protection fees,\" and 57 percent expressed skepticism about the likelihood of U.S. troops being deployed to defend Taiwan.
Chen emphasized that more people in Taiwan are breaking free from the information environment shaped by Taiwan authorities affiliated with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He warned that the DPP's reliance on the United States could lead Taiwan towards a path of disaster.
Addressing claims by Lai Ching-te that key nominees in U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's administration have \"close ties\" to Taiwan, Chen asserted that Taiwan remains an integral part of China.
Furthermore, Chen criticized Taiwan authorities for seeking U.S. support for the \"Taiwan independence\" agenda, stating that such efforts would not help Taiwan avoid the inevitable outcome of being abandoned.
