The Chinese mainland-based phonemaker Huawei has launched its latest flagship smartphone series, the Mate 70, on Tuesday. These new phones come pre-installed with HarmonyOS Next, Huawei's own operating system that does not support Android apps, sparking anticipation for a potential shift in the smartphone market.
During the launch event held in Shenzhen, Yu Chengdong, head of Huawei's consumer business, emphasized the Mate 70's superiority by stating, \"The only phone that can be better than a Mate is a new Mate.\"
While Yu did not disclose the system-on-a-chip (SoC) powering the new series—a trend consistent with recent launch events—he highlighted the Mate 70's advanced AI capabilities. These include photo and video enhancements, facial recognition for identifying strangers looking at the screen, and real-time translation of phone calls.
Starting at 5,499 yuan (approximately $760), the Mate 70 series has garnered over 3 million pre-orders through Huawei's online store, reflecting strong consumer interest in the new models.
