China is urging the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to adopt an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, criticizing the ongoing delays and the United States' use of veto power as major obstacles to peace.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, voiced his concerns during a UNSC meeting addressing the escalating conflict in Gaza on Saturday. He described the situation as a continuing \"roaring 'war machine'\" and highlighted the paralysis within the Security Council as a significant barrier to resolution.
Fu emphasized the urgent need for action, stating that further delays would result in greater destruction and increased civilian casualties. He called on the UNSC to act decisively and swiftly to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
Reiterating China's stance, Fu stressed that an immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire is essential. He stated, \"A ceasefire is the critical precondition to saving lives and cannot be tied to any other issues.\" Fu warned that insisting on preconditions for a ceasefire effectively condones the continued killing of innocent civilians and perpetuates the conflict.
Additionally, Fu called for the removal of all barriers to humanitarian aid, underscoring the importance of compliance with international humanitarian law. He specifically urged Israel to lift all restrictions on the entry of supplies, revoke legislation targeting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and ensure the safe and extensive distribution of humanitarian aid across Gaza.
