China Launches Campaign Against Algorithmic Exploitation of Delivery Workers

In a significant move to protect the rights of delivery workers, Chinese authorities have called on online platforms to scrutinize their algorithms and eliminate any systems that may exploit these workers. This directive was outlined in an official statement released on Sunday.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, among other regulatory bodies, as part of a broader campaign targeting flawed algorithmic practices that harm both users and workers in the internet sector.

A key focus of the campaign is addressing the compression of delivery times imposed by many platforms. This often results in increased pressure on delivery workers to meet tight deadlines, leading to higher instances of traffic violations and accidents.

To ensure fairness and transparency, online platforms are now required to openly disclose their algorithmic rules, including time estimates and route planning methods. Additionally, they must promptly respond to appeals from delivery workers regarding delays caused by uncontrollable factors such as traffic accidents and severe weather conditions.

Running until February next year, the campaign also extends to other internet-based businesses, including online video and shopping platforms. The goal is to tackle major concerns among netizens, such as the creation of 'information cocoons' through homogeneous content recommendations and the practice of big data-based price discrimination, which results in varied pricing for different users.
