China’s New Visa-Free Policy Welcomed by Japan, Boosting Bilateral Ties

China is broadening its visa-free program to include Japan and eight other countries, aiming to strengthen personnel exchanges and boost economic ties. Starting November 30, 2024, to December 31, 2025, ordinary passport holders from Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, and Japan can enter China without a visa on a trial basis.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, announced that the policy will also extend visa-free stays from 15 to 30 days and broaden the purposes of visits to include exchanges and visits.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba welcomed the move, emphasizing the importance of interaction between the two nations. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi echoed this sentiment, expressing hope for deeper exchanges.

With business trips from Japan to China on the rise post-pandemic, both governments and the business community anticipate that the expanded visa-free policy will further enhance economic relationships. The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China highlighted that the new policy is expected to activate essential personnel exchanges for strengthening economic ties.
