In a recent development at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meeting, China has emphasized the need for a political settlement to address the ongoing Iranian nuclear issue. Li Song, China's permanent representative to the IAEA, called on all relevant parties to adopt a constructive role in fostering a practical resolution.
During the board of governors meeting, major Western nations including Germany, France, the UK, and the U.S. pushed for a new resolution aimed at pressuring Iran on its nuclear activities. The proposal faced opposition, with China, Russia, and Burkina Faso voting against it, while 12 developing countries, including South Africa, India, and Egypt, chose to abstain.
Li Song highlighted China's support for the continued cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, praising the positive interactions between IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and Iranian officials. He noted the significant progress achieved during Grossi's recent visit to Iran.
Expressing concern over the potential escalation of tensions, Li warned that artificially creating confrontations within the board of governors would not resolve the issue but instead hinder the collaborative efforts between the IAEA and Iran, further complicating the matter.
He stressed that pressure and confrontation are ineffective tools in diplomacy and do not contribute to solving the Iranian nuclear dilemma. Reflecting on the 2015 nuclear deal, Li acknowledged its deterioration in recent years and asserted that the path forward lies in renewed political and diplomatic efforts, along with constructive cooperation on multilateral platforms.
