China and Brazil Strengthen Ties for a Shared Sustainable Future

China and Brazil have taken significant steps to strengthen their relationship by establishing a China-Brazil community focused on building a shared future for a more just and sustainable world. This development was announced in a joint statement signed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasilia on Wednesday.

The two leaders reflected on the enduring China-Brazil relations, which have thrived over the past 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties. Despite a changing international landscape, the partnership has maintained positive momentum, according to the statement.

Brazil was the first developing country to establish a strategic partnership with China in 1993, and the first in Latin America to form a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2012. Under the guidance of the two heads of state, the relationship is currently at its strongest in history, serving as a model for the Global South and other developing nations.

The statement also highlighted Brazil's reaffirmation of the one-China principle, recognizing the Taiwan region as an inalienable part of China's territory and acknowledging the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the entirety of China.

Furthermore, Brazil expressed its support for China’s efforts in promoting national rejuvenation through modernization. In a move to deepen cultural connections, both nations have agreed to designate 2026 as the China-Brazil Year of Culture, aiming to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen cultural ties between their peoples.
