At the forefront of the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese President Xi Jinping presented China's comprehensive strategy to foster global development. His blueprint outlines eight pivotal actions aimed at addressing hunger, poverty, and fostering sustainable growth worldwide.
1. Elevating the Belt and Road Initiative
China is accelerating its Belt and Road cooperation with an additional 700 billion yuan ($96.7 billion) in financing and an extra 80 billion yuan ($11.1 billion) for the Silk Road Fund. This move emphasizes the creation of a green and digital Silk Road, enhancing connectivity and sustainability across regions.
2. Advancing the Global Development Initiative
Building on over 1,100 ongoing projects, China commits $20 billion to support developing nations. The establishment of a Global South research center aims to bolster efforts in poverty reduction, food security, and the digital economy.
3. Strengthening Ties with Africa
During the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, Xi announced 10 partnership actions backed by 360 billion yuan ($49.7 billion). These initiatives are designed to propel modernization efforts across the continent over the next three years.
4. Combating Poverty and Ensuring Food Security
China is joining the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and pledging support for the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting. Additionally, it will host the International Conference on Food Loss and Waste, underscoring its commitment to these critical issues.
5. Promoting Open Science Collaboration
In partnership with Brazil, South Africa, and the African Union, China is launching an Initiative on International Cooperation in Open Science. This effort aims to provide the Global South with enhanced access to advancements in science, technology, and innovation.
6. Enhancing G20 Cooperation for the Global South
China supports the Roadmap to Increase Investment in Clean Energy and the High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy. Additionally, it backs the Entrepreneurship Research Center on G20 Economies in Beijing and promotes digital education and the digitization of cultural archives.
7. Implementing the G20 Anti-Corruption Action Plan
Focusing on integrity, China is collaborating with other developing nations on fugitive repatriation, asset recovery, and anti-corruption capacity building to strengthen global governance.
8. Opening Up to Least Developed Countries
China is committed to high-standard opening up by offering zero-tariff treatment for all tariff lines to least developed countries with diplomatic relations. Projections indicate that imports from other developing nations could surpass $8 trillion by 2030.
The summit also witnessed the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, marking a significant step towards collective action in combating these global challenges.
