Mainland Official Meets Former Taiwan Legislative Leader in Fujian

In a significant development for cross-Straits relations, Song Tao, the mainland's senior Taiwan affairs official, met with Wang Jin-pyng, the former leader of Taiwan region's legislature, on Monday in Xiamen City, located in southeast China's Fujian Province.

Wang is visiting the mainland until Thursday to honor his ancestors and engage in cross-Straits exchanges. During their meeting, Song emphasized the commitment to uphold the one-China principle, firmly oppose separatist activities seeking \"Taiwan independence,\" and advance national reunification with the goal of achieving national rejuvenation.

Responding to Song's remarks, Wang called for enhanced cross-Straits cultural exchanges to promote Chinese culture, strengthen national and cultural identity among compatriots, and maintain peace across the Straits.

Wang's visit includes a trip to the village of Baijiao in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, where he expressed his willingness to collaborate with mainland compatriots to achieve sustainable development and ensure the well-being of the Chinese nation. One of Wang's ancestors from Baijiao is believed to have joined Zheng Chenggong's expedition to recover Taiwan in the 1660s and later settled on the island.

Wang previously visited Baijiao in 2019 to honor his ancestors, accompanied by his immediate family and relatives, highlighting his ongoing commitment to fostering ties between the mainland and Taiwan.
