In a significant meeting on Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The discussions focused on enhancing the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia, aiming to contribute to the development and revitalization of both nations as well as the reform of global governance.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized China's readiness to collaborate closely with Russia. He highlighted the importance of implementing the outcomes of the BRICS Kazan summit, expanding the BRICS mechanism, and strengthening the influence of the Global South to foster a more multipolar world.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also noted that China has assumed the rotating presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). He expressed China's commitment to working with Russia to elevate the development of the SCO to new heights, reinforcing regional cooperation and stability.
Looking ahead to next year, Wang stressed the importance of commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War. He proposed that China and Russia jointly organize activities to honor the achievements of the Second World War and uphold international justice, drawing lessons from history to pave the way for a peaceful future.
Sergei Lavrov responded by stating that the current level of Russia-China relations is unprecedented. He acknowledged the close contact and new cooperation goals set by the leaders of both countries. Lavrov underscored that the relationship between Russia and China is based on principles of equality, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation, which are in the best interests of both peoples and supported by the Global South.
Lavrov also expressed gratitude for China's support during Russia's presidency of BRICS and pledged Russia’s active support for China’s leadership of the SCO. He highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the G20, APEC, and the United Nations.
Additionally, the two foreign ministers discussed the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and the situation on the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing the need for diplomacy and stability in these regions.
