In a significant development, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Saturday that the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in China. This announcement was made during the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima, Peru, where leaders from various APEC member economies discussed critical global issues such as trade, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
\"We look forward to working with all parties to deepen Asia-Pacific cooperation for the benefit of the peoples in the region,\" Xi stated.
This will mark the third time China has hosted the prestigious APEC gathering since its inception in 1989. President Xi emphasized the pivotal role APEC has played in steering the Asia-Pacific region towards development, prosperity, and enhanced connectivity, highlighting its status as a primary engine of global economic growth.
Addressing the challenges facing Asia-Pacific cooperation, including geopolitical tensions, unilateralism, and protectionism, Xi urged APEC economies to act in solidarity and cooperation. He proposed building an open and interconnected framework for Asia-Pacific cooperation, advocating for the removal of barriers to trade, investment, technology, and services.
President Xi also highlighted the importance of green innovation as a catalyst for regional growth. He revealed that China is developing new quality productive forces based on its unique conditions and is keen on deepening cooperation with other parties on green innovation initiatives.
As part of these efforts, China will launch a Global Cross-Border Data Flow Cooperation Initiative, aiming to promote efficient, convenient, and secure cross-border data flows through enhanced collaboration with partner economies.
Xi concluded by upholding a universally beneficial and inclusive vision for Asia-Pacific development, stating that China's continued growth will offer new opportunities for the region and the world, inviting all parties to join the \"express train\" of China's development and grow alongside the Chinese economy.
