In a significant move towards fostering innovation and sustainability, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on China and Singapore to enhance cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and green development. This call was made during a meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on the sidelines of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima, Peru.
President Xi highlighted the continuous growth of the bilateral relationship, emphasizing it as a model of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. He expressed China’s commitment to upholding the direction of friendship, strengthening high-level exchanges, and maintaining mutual trust with Singapore. Xi also encouraged Singapore to take advantage of new opportunities arising from China's development, inviting participation in key projects like the Suzhou Industrial Park, Tianjin Eco-City, Chongqing Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, and Guangzhou Knowledge City.
Facing unprecedented global changes, China aims to collaborate with Singapore on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and APEC to promote a multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization. Prime Minister Wong echoed these sentiments, noting the robust growth in economic relations and the strong foundation of mutual respect and trust between the two nations.
Wong also affirmed Singapore’s support for the one-China principle and opposition to any form of Taiwan independence, reinforcing the foundation of their diplomatic ties. Looking ahead, Singapore is set to celebrate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China next year, aiming to open a new chapter in their comprehensive and forward-looking partnership.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of enhancing collaboration in ASEAN and APEC, opposing protectionism, and promoting trade and investment liberalization. This united stance underscores their commitment to safeguarding regional stability and fostering sustainable development.
