China and Chile Forge Stronger Ties, Expand Cooperation at APEC Summit

In a significant display of international collaboration, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced the expansion of bilateral cooperation between China and Chile during the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

President Xi emphasized the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations, highlighting Chile as the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. He expressed China’s readiness to celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year by enhancing strategic communication and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.

The leaders discussed broadening cooperation in key areas such as infrastructure, clean energy, and information and communications technologies. Xi advocated for high-level free trade and more open industrial policies to create sustainable and expansive collaboration opportunities.

Chilean President Boric acknowledged the strong economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. He reiterated Chile’s commitment to the one-China principle and expressed enthusiasm for deepening exchanges in culture and education. Boric also welcomed the opening of the Chancay Port, signaling Chile’s support for Chinese investments in infrastructure and capacity building.

Both leaders underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation within frameworks like the United Nations, World Trade Organization, and APEC. They agreed to oppose protectionism, safeguard global free trade, and maintain stable supply chains, aiming to build a resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community.

Additionally, Chile expressed support for China’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA), further solidifying their strategic partnership.
