China has launched its \"Action Plan for Early Warning Systems to Promote Climate Change Adaptation (2025-2027)\" during a high-level meeting at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The comprehensive plan highlights China’s commitment to supporting developing countries in strengthening their early warning capabilities and overall climate change adaptation strategies.
Focusing on four key areas, the action plan aims to:
- Share knowledge on climate risk assessment
- Build climate risk monitoring and forecasting platforms
- Share experiences in developing climate-adaptive societies
- Enhance early warning capabilities in developing nations
As part of this initiative, China will launch three Fengyun geostationary meteorological satellites over the next two years. These satellites are designed to provide high-frequency meteorological disaster monitoring services to countries across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.
Additionally, the plan includes the implementation of a South-South cooperation flagship project focused on early warning for climate change. This project will supply meteorological observation equipment and cloud-based early warning systems to pertinent developing countries.
Earlier in the week, the China Meteorological Administration and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment signed a tripartite cooperation agreement with the World Meteorological Organization. This agreement aims to support the UN's \"Early Warnings for All\" initiative, further solidifying China’s role in global climate resilience efforts.
