This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). As the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting approaches, a recent survey conducted by CGTN has revealed that a significant majority of global netizens recognize APEC's pivotal role in fostering regional economic growth and deepening cooperation.
The survey, which garnered participation from 6,071 overseas netizens across various languages, found that 86.4% of respondents praised APEC for its remarkable achievements in promoting trade and investment liberalization. This has positioned the Asia-Pacific region as the most active geo-economic bloc with immense growth potential worldwide.
Respondents emphasized the importance of multilateralism and economic globalization, with 85.2% advocating for collaborative efforts to build an open economy and a robust framework for regional cooperation. Additionally, 89.5% opposed all forms of protectionism, supporting open development and the construction of the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area in a spirit of inclusivity.
Amidst global economic challenges and sluggish growth, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to shoulder greater responsibilities. The theme for APEC 2024, \"Empowerment, Inclusion, and Growth,\" reflects the collective aspiration for the region to uphold cooperation and meet contemporary challenges. An overwhelming 93.7% of respondents called for consensus-building to create a community of shared future marked by openness, innovation, connectivity, and win-win cooperation.
The survey also highlighted the critical role of developed economies in supporting Global South countries, with 88.5% advocating for increased assistance to achieve common development across the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, 90.1% emphasized the need for innovation and green development to drive new growth amidst the ongoing scientific and technological revolutions.
China's involvement in APEC since its reform and opening up has been instrumental. With 95.1% of respondents highly affirming China's role as a \"propellant\" in APEC economic cooperation, the survey praised China's commitment to opening up, active participation in APEC affairs, and significant contributions to the region's prosperity and stability.
The survey was published on CGTN's platforms in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian, reflecting its broad international reach and the global recognition of APEC's impact.
