At the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, China's Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang made a compelling case for strengthening global early warning systems to combat the escalating impacts of climate change.
Ding, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the increasing frequency of extreme weather events that threaten lives, properties, and economic stability worldwide. He emphasized that enhancing early warning systems and climate adaptation capacities is both urgent and crucial.
Underlining China's commitment to international cooperation, Ding outlined three key initiatives:
- Improving Global Risk Assessment: Collaborating to enhance risk assessment capabilities and standardize climate risk evaluations to support effective climate governance.
- Building a Global Early Warning Network: Sharing technology and increasing system interconnectivity to establish a robust global early warning framework.
- Establishing a Climate Adaptation Partnership: Launching a South-South cooperation flagship project to provide meteorological equipment, early warning systems, and capacity-building training to developing countries.
China also unveiled its Action Plan on Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation (2025-2027), signaling a strategic approach to addressing climate challenges through enhanced preparedness and resilience. This initiative aims to support global efforts in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change by fostering collaboration and technological innovation.
The meeting saw participation from global leaders, including COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev and representatives from the World Meteorological Organization, underscoring the collective commitment to tackling climate change. China's proactive stance at COP29 reinforces its role as a key player in the global fight against climate change, advocating for unified and effective strategies to safeguard the planet.
