Shanghai Emerges as China’s Premier Musical Theater Hub

Shanghai is quickly becoming the 'port' of musicals in China, attracting large audiences and establishing itself as a key player in the country's vibrant performing arts scene. At the 7th China International Import Expo in Shanghai, a spectacular musical theater performance drew a significant crowd, highlighting the city's commitment to making this art form a cornerstone of its cultural identity.

From hosting world-renowned productions to exporting Chinese musicals globally, Shanghai has rightfully earned its title as China's premier destination for musical theater. The city's dedication to the arts is evident in its bustling theater scene and the diverse range of performances on offer.

Fei Yuanhong, general manager of Shanghai Culture Square Theater Management Co., Ltd., shared insights with CGTN, revealing that international musicals now make up about two-thirds of the shows at Shanghai Culture Square. With over 150 performances annually, the venue is a hub for both local and international talent.

\"By the end of this year alone, we will host over 60 performances from five countries, many of which will be national premieres,\" said Fei Yuanhong. This influx of global productions not only enhances Shanghai's cultural landscape but also fosters cross-border artistic collaborations.

As Shanghai continues to support and expand its musical theater offerings, it is set to become a beacon for the performing arts in China, attracting audiences and artists from around the world.
