In a significant cultural milestone, Italy has returned 56 lost Chinese cultural relics to China, as announced by China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration on Saturday. This successful repatriation underscores the deepening cooperation between the two nations in combating the illicit trade of cultural artifacts.
The returned relics include invaluable pieces from China’s Gansu, Qinghai, and Shaanxi provinces, spanning over 5,000 years of history. Among the artifacts are painted pottery from the ancient Majiayao culture, providing crucial insights into the early development of Chinese civilization. Additionally, the collection features pottery figurines from the Han and Tang dynasties, as well as animal-shaped ceramics from the Yuan Dynasty.
This latest return follows Italy’s previous repatriation of 796 Chinese cultural relics in March 2019, highlighting a sustained commitment to cultural heritage protection. The 56 artifacts were initially seized by the Italian Carabinieri military police in October 2022 and April 2024. Upon notification, China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration swiftly provided detailed identification and legal documentation, facilitating their return through diplomatic channels.
Over the past 12 years, China has successfully reclaimed more than 2,100 pieces or sets of artifacts from abroad, reflecting its intensified efforts to recover cultural relics lost overseas. These initiatives not only preserve China's rich history but also foster international collaboration in safeguarding global heritage.
