Vietnam Opens New Consulate in Southwest China to Boost Bilateral Ties

In a significant move to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations, Vietnam has announced the establishment of a new consulate general in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China. This addition complements Vietnam's existing embassy in Beijing and consulates in Nanning, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Kunming.

The inauguration ceremony, attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, took place during the eighth Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Summit in Kunming, Yunnan Province. The event marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing collaboration between the two nations.

Premier Li emphasized China's commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation through various dialogue mechanisms and the steering committee for bilateral cooperation. He highlighted the potential for expanding trade and investment, particularly in emerging sectors such as e-commerce, the digital economy, and green energy. Li also outlined plans to improve connectivity by developing railways, highways, and smart ports, promoting seamless border trade, and exploring the creation of cross-border economic cooperation zones.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh reiterated that fostering long-term, stable, and friendly relations with China remains a strategic priority for Vietnam's foreign policy. He expressed Vietnam's dedication to deepening cooperation in economy, trade, connectivity, and culture, while also enhancing communication and collaboration within multilateral frameworks like the GMS and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation.

This new consulate is poised to play a crucial role in facilitating closer ties between Vietnam and China, providing enhanced support for Vietnamese citizens and businesses in southwest China, and fostering greater mutual understanding and collaboration across various sectors.
