The Chinese Foreign Ministry extended its congratulations to Donald Trump following his election as the President of the United States on Wednesday night.
In an official statement on their website, the ministry said, \"We respect the choice of the American people and congratulate Mr. Trump on being elected as the president of the United States.\"
Earlier in the day, prior to the election results being announced, the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed that China's policy towards the United States remains steadfast. \"China will continue to view and handle its relations with the United States based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation,\" stated Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during a daily press briefing.
Donald Trump, the former US president and Republican candidate, declared victory at his election headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida, after Fox News projected that he secured more than 270 Electoral College votes. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, called Trump to offer her congratulations and delivered a concession speech, acknowledging the need to accept the election results.
