China is calling on researchers worldwide to apply for the first batch of lunar samples returned by the Chang'e-6 mission, along with the eighth batch from the Chang'e-5 mission.
The Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center, under the China National Space Administration (CNSA), announced on Tuesday the launch of the application process for these invaluable lunar specimens. Interested researchers can submit their proposals through the official data and sample release system before the application window closes on November 22, 2024.
After the submission period, the Lunar Exploration Center will undertake a thorough review to assess each proposal's merit. This initiative aims to foster international collaboration and advance scientific understanding of the Moon.
The Chang'e-6 mission has marked a significant milestone in space exploration by collecting 1,935.3 grams of samples from the far side of the Moon, specifically from the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin. This region is unique and distinct from the well-studied nearside areas like Oceanus Procellarum, offering new insights into the Moon's composition and history.
