The Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, has kicked off its 12th session this Monday in Beijing. Presided over by Zhao Leji, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, the inaugural plenary meeting set the stage for a series of legislative reviews and deliberations.
During the session, lawmakers will examine a range of draft laws aimed at enhancing various sectors. These include a draft preschool education law designed to reform early childhood education, and revisions to the Law on Protection of Cultural Relics to better preserve China's rich heritage.
Additionally, the committee will review amendments to the Mineral Resources Law and a new energy law, reflecting China's ongoing commitment to sustainable development and resource management. The Anti-Money Laundering Law is also on the agenda, highlighting efforts to strengthen financial regulations and combat illicit activities.
Beyond these, the NPC Standing Committee will deliberate on amendments to the Law on Supervision, enhancing oversight mechanisms across all levels of people's congresses. Further discussions will focus on revising the Arbitration Law, Maritime Law, and the Law on Popularization of Science and Technology, underscoring the legislature's dedication to legal modernization and societal advancement.
In addition to legislative matters, lawmakers will consider a State Council bill aimed at raising the ceilings on local government debt, addressing existing hidden debts, and ensuring fiscal responsibility. Several reports on handling proposals submitted by lawmakers, a deputy qualification report, and various personnel-related bills will also be reviewed during the session.
