Chinese Envoy Calls on U.S. to Support Peace Efforts in Ukraine

In a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative, urged the United States to refrain from obstructing peace efforts in the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Geng made these remarks amidst continued U.S.-led arms transfers to Kyiv.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu highlighted the persistent military support Ukraine receives, including heavy conventional weapons and cluster munitions, which pose environmental and safety risks due to their indiscriminate nature.

Geng emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles of no battlefield spillover, avoidance of hostilities escalation, and prompt de-escalation to pursue a political resolution. He called on all parties involved to demonstrate political will and engage in peace talks, urging the international community to facilitate and support this process.

Addressing the U.S., Geng accused the nation of escalating security tensions in Europe and fostering divisive confrontations. He criticized the continuous supply of weapons to the conflict zone and the overt advocacy for Russia's defeat, labeling it as a blatant push of geopolitical strategy.

Furthermore, Geng accused the U.S. of undermining China's peace initiatives by associating China with Russia, attempting to create rifts between China and Europe, and fostering rivalries based on opposing camps. He warned that such actions not only lead to global disputes and chaos but also ultimately harm the United States itself.

Responding to U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood's allegations of China's support for Russia, Geng clarified that China has not provided weapons to any party in the Ukraine conflict. He assured that Chinese companies maintain regular trade with countries worldwide, including Russia and Ukraine, adhering strictly to World Trade Organization rules and market principles.

Geng reiterated China's consistent call for a ceasefire, end to hostilities, and the resolution of disputes through diplomatic negotiations over the past three years. He challenged the international community to discern who truly supports peace and who hinders it.

Addressing U.S. actions to pressure China, Geng condemned the imposition of unilateral sanctions and illegal 'long-arm jurisdiction' on Chinese entities and individuals. He assured that China will take necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its companies and citizens.
