In a significant meeting held last Thursday in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China's enduring support and contribution to the United Nations. The discussion took place between Wang Yi and Philemon Yang, the newly appointed president of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Philemon Yang, hailing from Cameroon, assumed his role following his swearing-in at the conclusion of the 78th UNGA session in September. During his visit to China from Wednesday to Sunday, Yang expressed his appreciation for China's rapid economic development and long-term social stability.
Wang Yi emphasized that the UNGA stands as the most representative and comprehensive charter body of the UN, serving as a crucial platform for equal consultation, solidarity, and cooperation among all member countries. Highlighting China's position as a founding member of the UN and a permanent member of the Security Council, Wang advocated for the UN to act as a force for justice, safeguarding world peace, and taking a leading role in addressing global hotspots.
The Chinese Foreign Minister called for enhanced dialogue, consultation, and win-win outcomes, urging the international community to move away from conflicts, coercion, and zero-sum approaches. He expressed hope that the UN would strengthen multilateralism and reject unilateralism and hegemony, positioning the organization as a constructive force in global governance reform.
Wang also stressed the importance of increasing the representation and voice of the Global South within the UN framework to ensure that development benefits a broader range of countries. He assured that China is ready to collaborate with the UN to steer global governance reform in the right direction and to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
In response, Philemon Yang lauded China's commitment to maintaining an international system centered around the UN and its advocacy for resolving disputes through dialogue. He acknowledged China's selfless support to developing countries, including Cameroon, and reiterated the UN's commitment to adhering to the one-China principle, appreciating China's steadfast support for the organization.
Yang expressed confidence that China will continue to play an indispensable role in promoting sustainable development and fostering cooperation in areas such as financial system reform, artificial intelligence, and youth exchanges. The two leaders also exchanged views on pivotal issues like the reform of the Security Council, underscoring the collaborative spirit between China and the UN in addressing global challenges.
