China Advocates for Universal Humanitarian Law at International Red Cross Conference
During the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, China's permanent representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Chen Xu, emphasized the need for all nations to translate their political commitments under the Geneva Conventions into tangible actions. His call aims to ensure the universal and consistent application of international humanitarian law amid increasing global humanitarian challenges.
Chen highlighted the unprecedented severity of the current global humanitarian situation, stressing the importance of genuine multilateralism. He urged nations to work together to advance global peace and progress for humanity.
Addressing the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict, Chen stressed that achieving an immediate and lasting ceasefire is crucial to alleviate humanitarian suffering. He called on major powers with influence over the involved parties to take a constructive role in facilitating peace.
Furthermore, Chen underscored the importance of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure during military operations. He advocated for safe and unimpeded humanitarian access in conflict areas to safeguard humanitarian organizations and their staff.
He also pointed out that developed countries should assume greater responsibilities in providing support and assistance to developing nations.
Reaffirming China's longstanding commitment, Chen stated that China is dedicated to upholding and implementing international humanitarian law. He highlighted China's active involvement in global humanitarian aid and its consistent role as an advocate, participant, and contributor to international humanitarian efforts.
