Singaporean Scholar Praises China’s CIIE as Global Trade Model

The curtains have just closed on this year’s 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, marking another milestone in China’s push for more open, mutually beneficial trade. Over six days in early November, the event welcomed thousands of exhibitors and professionals from around the globe, highlighting the Chinese mainland’s role as a hub for global commerce.

At a CMG interview, Singaporean scholar Kishore Mahbubani applauded the initiative: "China is the only country in the world that holds a dedicated international import expo, which is in itself a highly positive initiative," he said. For young professionals and businesses watching global markets, this focus on imports sends a clear message: trade isn’t just about selling, it’s about listening, learning, and building partnerships.

Opening Doors to New Opportunities

The expo brought together thousands of exhibitors from over 100 countries and regions, showcasing products ranging from emerging tech solutions to sustainable agricultural goods. Organizers reported a significant rise in signed deals compared to last year, reflecting renewed demand and optimism among buyers and sellers alike.

Lessons for a Connected World

Mahbubani, a former diplomat and seasoned scholar, highlighted CIIE’s potential as a blueprint for other economies. "By prioritizing imports, China is reinforcing the idea that global trade should be balanced and inclusive," he noted. This approach resonates with startups and established firms across G20 nations, offering insights into building reciprocal trade relationships.

Looking Ahead

As businesses and thought leaders analyze the outcomes of the 8th CIIE, many are already eyeing next year’s expo for new partnerships and innovations. For a generation of global citizens, the message is clear: in an interconnected economy, openness and collaboration drive real impact.
