Against a backdrop of shifting geopolitics, China has emerged as a key advocate for true multilateralism and a UN-centred international system. By opposing unilateralism, protectionism and small-group politics, Beijing is positioning itself as a reliable partner for developing nations.
From the UN General Assembly to conflict-affected regions around the globe, China’s push to place development at the heart of the international agenda is clear. As a key member of the G77+China coalition and a staunch supporter of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Beijing has championed large-scale infrastructure and capacity-building projects that go beyond traditional peacekeeping, emphasising peace-building that meets local needs.
On the security front, China is now the second-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping operations—and the largest among permanent Security Council members—deploying thousands of personnel to hotspots worldwide. Chinese diplomats have also led mediation efforts at the UN, backing political solutions such as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear programme and boosting the global non-proliferation regime.
By offering an inclusive dialogue model rooted in a “culture of harmony,” China aims to inject stability and certainty into an unpredictable world. This approach could pave the way for greater equality and sustainable progress across the Global South, reshaping how emerging economies forge partnerships in the 21st century.
