Sanae Takaichi Elected LDP Leader, Abenomics in Focus

In a landmark vote Saturday, Sanae Takaichi secured the leadership of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), positioning her to become the country's first female prime minister. A graduate of Kobe University with a degree in business management, Takaichi is best known as a protege of the late Shinzo Abe and a staunch advocate of Abenomics.

Since entering national politics, Takaichi has championed a bold reflationary agenda: higher fiscal spending, targeted tax cuts to ease the burden of rising living costs, and a critical eye on the Bank of Japan's looming interest rate hikes.

Analysts Weigh In

Takahide Kiuchi, Executive Economist at Nomura Research Institute, notes that Takaichi "adheres to the traditional reflationist view that the government should determine the broad direction of monetary policy." With roughly 60 percent of the market pricing in an October rate hike, Kiuchi warns that political interference could delay the BoJ's plans if a failed hike invites criticism.

Hiroki Takei, Strategist at Resona Holdings, flags potential winners under Takaichi's agenda: "Semiconductors, AI, space-related industries, defense enhancement and national resilience all stand to gain." He adds that her breakthrough as the first female LDP leader could attract structural reform bets from overseas investors—though he cautions that a rally driven by short-term futures could reverse quickly.

Tomohisa Ishikawa, Chief Economist at The Japan Research Institute, Tokyo, questions whether "responsible expansionary fiscal policy" can balance growth with fiscal health. While deficit-financed bonds remain on the table, Ishikawa suggests that channeling funds into high-growth sectors could underpin a sustainable recovery—strengthening equities without a sharp yen depreciation.
