US Tariffs Cloud Africa’s Industrial Growth, Warns Zambian Expert

In a recent interview with China Media Group, Sydney Mwamba, executive director of the Policy Monitoring and Research Centre in Zambia, warned that US tariffs are sending shockwaves through African industries. According to Mwamba, higher duties on exports risk choking off vital revenue streams and slowing down manufacturing across the continent.

"US tariffs will impact industrial and economic growth and lead to job losses in African countries," Mwamba explains. For businesses that have invested in expanding production, the sudden rise in costs could force tough decisions — from scaling back operations to delaying new projects.

Young entrepreneurs and business leaders across Africa are already eyeing alternative routes. Regional trade agreements and intra-African partnerships may offer some relief, while tech-driven solutions — like e-commerce platforms and digital supply chains — open new windows to global markets.

As Africa charts its economic future, the challenge will be building resilience in a shifting trade landscape. By focusing on innovation, skills development and sustainable practices, the next generation of changemakers aims to turn today’s hurdles into tomorrow’s growth engines.
