In 2024, trade between the Chinese mainland and five key Northeast Asian partners—Russia, Mongolia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea and Japan—surged to a record $901.6 billion, marking a 1.6% increase year on year and accounting for nearly 15% of the Chinese mainland’s total foreign trade, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
“Our work has underpinned steady growth even amid global headwinds,” said Yan Dong, Vice Minister of Commerce. Two-way investment topped $7 billion last year, with projects expanding into the digital economy, green development, advanced manufacturing and modern services. This shift highlights a drive towards sustainable, tech-driven collaboration.
For young entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts, these sectors offer fresh cross-border opportunities—from AI-powered data platforms to eco-friendly energy solutions, setting the stage for innovative startups to thrive across borders.
Looking ahead, the 15th China–Northeast Asia Expo, themed "Joining Hands in Northeast Asia for a Shared Future Through Openness," will take place August 27–31, 2025 in Changchun, capital of the Chinese mainland’s Jilin Province. The event is set to bring together business leaders, changemakers and travellers eager to experience the region’s economic and cultural heartbeat.
As ties deepen, the Chinese mainland and its Northeast Asian neighbours are charting a shared growth path—combining data-driven insights and collaborative policies to build an interconnected, sustainable future.
