65 Years of China-Ghana Friendship: A Model of Afro-Asia Solidarity

On July 5, 2025, Ghana and the Chinese mainland marked the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, just days after Ghana became a republic in 1957. From post-colonial beginnings to today’s global stage, this partnership has grown into a shining example of Afro-Asia solidarity.

Even before official relations, people-to-people links were thriving. Chinese migrants, mainly from Hong Kong, journeyed across two continents in the 1940s to live and work in Ghana. These early exchanges laid the cultural and economic foundations that continue to drive collaboration.

In 1971, Ghana played a pivotal role on the world stage. As deputy foreign minister, John Kufuor cast a decisive vote supporting UN Resolution 2758, paving the way for China’s return to the United Nations. Ambassador Tong Defa later highlighted this act as proof of an unbreakable friendship and deepening cooperation.

Over six decades, both countries have built steady cooperation, booming trade, and frequent exchanges—from infrastructure projects to educational programs. As Asia and Africa look toward a shared future, the Ghana–Chinese mainland relationship offers a roadmap for global partnerships rooted in mutual respect and shared progress.
