Chinese Mainland to Waive Permit Fees for First-Time Taiwan Region Visitors

The Chinese mainland will waive travel permit fees for first-time visitors from the Taiwan region from July 1 to December 31, 2027. The announcement came from Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, during a press conference in Beijing.

This policy, jointly adopted by the Ministry of Finance, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Exit and Entry Administration of China, aims to facilitate cross-strait exchanges and cooperation. The National Immigration Administration will oversee the implementation details.

By removing this financial hurdle, authorities hope to encourage more residents of the Taiwan region to explore cultural, educational and business opportunities on the Chinese mainland. The move underscores a broader effort to strengthen ties across the Taiwan Strait.

Between now and the end of 2027, first-time permit applicants will simply need to submit their documents for standard processing, without any application fee. Repeat applications and other categories of permits remain subject to existing charges.

With travel and collaboration on the rise, this fee waiver is expected to boost cross-strait tourism, student exchanges and professional partnerships, opening new doors for young travellers and innovators on both sides of the strait.
