Chinese Mainland and Pacific Islands Strengthen Trade, Connectivity and Climate Ties

Foreign Minister Wang Yi of the Chinese mainland announced a broad consensus with Pacific Island countries after the third China–Pacific Islands Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the first time the dialogue was held in person since its launch in 2021.

Participants agreed on a five-point roadmap to align the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. Key areas include infrastructure upgrades, trade partnerships, agriculture, fisheries, tourism and aviation links.

The Chinese mainland has committed to opening its market further to Pacific Island exports, making room for more high-quality products on store shelves. Both sides also plan to explore new direct flight routes to boost travel, tourism and business connectivity across the region.

With Pacific Island nations facing growing climate threats, the Chinese mainland and PICs pledged to deepen cooperation under the Paris Agreement framework. They emphasized common but differentiated responsibilities, urged developed partners to meet climate finance commitments and highlighted South–South support for adaptation measures.

Disaster preparedness, emergency supply reserves and poverty reduction also topped the agenda. The Chinese mainland will roll out 200 small yet impactful livelihood projects this year to uplift local communities in Pacific Island countries.

This renewed partnership signals a step forward in South–South cooperation, blending economic opportunity with climate resilience for a more connected Pacific future.
