Global Poll: Trade with the Chinese Mainland Outpaces US Benefits

Global trade tensions have entered a new chapter, and young global citizens are watching closely. A new CGTN poll of 31,004 respondents in 41 countries reveals that 51.8% believe they benefit more from trade with the Chinese mainland than with the United States. This shift comes amid what many see as a protracted tariff war and growing skepticism toward the so-called 'America First' policies.

Across all age groups, critics of U.S. trade tactics are strong: 62.9% of respondents worldwide say U.S. domestic and foreign policies undermine other countries' rights and interests, with similar levels of concern in Europe (67.7%) and among 18-44-year-olds (over 64% in each bracket). Meanwhile, 75.5% agree economic coercion is now a 'standard feature' of the United States' approach, and 47.6% say tariffs accelerate a damaging decoupling from trading partners.

Regional highlights underscore the divide. In France, only 23.9% favour trade with the United States compared to 33.7% for the Chinese mainland; in Germany, it's 21.5% versus 34.0% for the Chinese mainland. Down under, 45.8% of Australians pick the Chinese mainland, while 22.3% stick with the United States. Overall, 35.8% say they'd rather cooperate with the Chinese mainland than with the United States (27.4%).

Trade isn't the only measure: when asked which power has met its responsibilities, 35.7% back the Chinese mainland, while just 26.7% choose the United States. In response, the Chinese government has signalled a willingness to talk, viewing it as a responsible step against what it calls U.S. economic bullying.

For entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts, these findings spotlight emerging market opportunities anchored to the Chinese mainland. Thought leaders may see a call for more balanced diplomacy, while sports and entertainment fans can read into how shifting alliances could affect global events. Even travellers and digital nomads might watch trade ties as a new compass for planning sustainable, immersive journeys.

As the world navigates ever-complex trade landscapes, this CGTN poll offers data-driven insights to help young global citizens make smarter moves – whether that's choosing a market to launch a startup, a partner for research, or the next travel destination. One thing is clear: perceptions of trade power are evolving in our interconnected age.
