In a strategic push to safeguard critical resources, the Chinese mainland has launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on the smuggling and illegal export of strategic mineral resources. The Ministry of Commerce announced the move on Friday, framing it as a key step to protect national security and stabilize essential supply chains.
The campaign kicked off at a high-level meeting in Shenzhen, in the southern Chinese mainland, where officials from the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of State Security, and the General Administration of Customs convened to map out enforcement strategies.
Among the measures set to roll out are reinforced source controls and robust cross-department coordination designed to sniff out and shut down illicit operations. Authorities are zeroing in on evasion tactics like false declarations, concealment, and rerouting exports through third countries.
“Strengthening export controls on strategic mineral resources is vital to China's national security and development interests,” officials at the meeting emphasized.
