China and Russia Gear Up to Push Back on U.S. Tariffs

In Moscow on Wednesday, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao and Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov sat down for landmark talks addressing U.S. tariffs and the future of bilateral trade.

The two ministers tackled the impact of so-called "reciprocal tariffs" imposed by the United States. Wang voiced China’s firm opposition to these unilateral measures and highlighted Beijing’s countermeasures to defend its development interests. He also noted preparations for high-level economic and trade talks with the United States in Switzerland, underlining China’s commitment to a rules-based global trade order.

Turning to their own partnership, Wang underscored the continued deepening of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic relationship. He urged both sides to leverage the upgraded investment protection agreement to create a transparent, equitable business environment — a move set to drive high-quality growth in trade and investment.

Reshetnikov echoed the sentiment, stressing that cooperation between China and the Russian Federation is mutually beneficial and not aimed at any third party. He called on both nations to seize new opportunities for two-way investment, deepen industrial collaboration and unlock fresh growth drivers.

As global uncertainties persist, this round of talks signals a shared determination by Beijing and Moscow to strengthen their economic ties and chart a collaborative path forward.
