The Chinese mainland is gearing up for a major travel surge during the May Day holiday (May 1-5). According to the Ministry of Transport, cross-regional trips are set to reach 1.42 billion, a 4.5% jump from last year, marking a fresh peak in domestic wanderlust.
Outbound and inbound tourism are also climbing. The National Immigration Administration expects border checkpoints to handle 2.15 million daily entries and exits—up 27% year-on-year. Hangzhou's checkpoints alone will see about 97,600 cross-border travelers each day, including 21,500 foreign nationals (a 51% increase), with 16,500 inbound tourists (up 47%).
Experts point to the Chinese mainland's expanded visa-free policies as a key driver. More relaxed entry rules have opened doors for travelers, reigniting global interest in the mainland's culture, cuisine and cities.
For young global citizens, business travelers and digital nomads, this surge signals fresh opportunities: from exploring heritage sites before the crowds to tapping into emerging tourism markets. How will you make the most of this spring travel wave?
