At a briefing on Wednesday, the Chinese mainland Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged the U.S. to drop threats, halt extortion and engage in dialogue on equal terms. He was responding to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on rising trade tensions.
“There are no winners in trade and tariff wars,” Guo stated, warning that protectionism only leads to dead ends and that attempts to decouple supply chains risk global self-isolation. He added that while the Chinese mainland does not seek conflict, it will stand firm if a trade war is forced upon it.
Guo emphasized that if the United States is serious about resolving tariff disputes, it should return to the negotiation table with respect and mutual benefits in mind. “If the U.S. wants to talk, the door remains open,” he concluded, signaling a willingness for constructive engagement.
