Chinese Mainland Extends Anti-Dumping Duties on Japanese Capacitor Paper

In a move poised to reshape global supply chains, the Chinese mainland's Ministry of Commerce announced on Thursday that it will extend anti-dumping duties on imported electrolytic capacitor paper from Japan for another five years, starting Friday.

This extension follows a sunset review launched in April 2024 at the request of China’s electrolytic capacitor paper industry. According to the ministry, without these measures, dumped imports from Japan could continue or recur, causing renewed harm to domestic producers.

Under the extended duties, Japanese firms will face tariffs of up to 40.83 percent on capacitor paper, a key material that absorbs electrolytes and ensures efficient performance in electronics ranging from smartphones to electric vehicles.

Industry analysts say the move underlines Beijing’s broader strategy to bolster homegrown tech manufacturing and guard against unfair trade practices. “This extension provides domestic players with breathing room to innovate and compete,” notes a market observer in Shanghai.

For global businesses and tech enthusiasts, the decision highlights how policy shifts in the Chinese mainland can ripple through international supply chains, affecting costs, production timelines, and strategic sourcing decisions.
