On April 15, a new era in green shipping began as the world’s largest 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship, CMA CGM SEINE, was officially named and delivered at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding base on Changxing Island in Shanghai.
Built for French shipping giant CMA CGM and scheduled to serve the Far East to Europe route from April 18, this state-of-the-art vessel is a marvel of maritime engineering. Measuring 399 meters in length with a beam of 61.3 meters, a depth of 33.5 meters, and a draft of 14.5 meters, the ship is designed to transport up to 220,000 tonnes of cargo while stacking containers as high as a 25‐storey building.
The ship’s crowning innovation is its LNG-powered system—its “green heart.” An 18,600 cubic meter MARK III membrane-type fuel tank powers nearly 20,000 nautical miles of eco-friendly voyages. This breakthrough design reduces CO2 emissions by about 20%, lowers nitrogen oxides by up to 85%, and nearly eliminates particulate and sulphur oxide emissions compared to conventional ships.
Enhancements over its predecessor include an increased cargo capacity by 764 containers, improved fuel and gas consumption, advanced water ingress alarm systems compliant with SOLAS regulations, comprehensive safety upgrades, and noise-reduced crew quarters.
Having delivered 17 container ships for CMA CGM—including 12 dual-fuel vessels—Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding continues to lead in maritime innovation. The CMA CGM SEINE stands as a milestone for the China Shipbuilding Group, symbolizing a sustainable, efficient future for global shipping.
For young global citizens, tech enthusiasts, and sustainability advocates, this vessel exemplifies modern progress in international trade and eco-conscious engineering, setting a new standard in green maritime technology.
