In a groundbreaking advance for the shipping industry, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC) delivered the world’s first ultra-large LNG dual-fuel container ship, CMA CGM SEINE, to France's CMA CGM Group in Shanghai. This innovative vessel heralds a new era in sustainable maritime transport by blending cutting-edge technology with eco-friendly design.
Measuring 399 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, the ship is built to haul up to 220,000 tonnes of cargo and transport nearly 23,900 TEU containers, including 2,200 refrigerated units. Its impressive 18,600-cubic-meter LNG fuel bunker enables the vessel to travel almost 20,000 nautical miles without refueling, setting a new benchmark in efficiency.
Engineered with a dual-fuel power system, the CMA CGM SEINE can run on either LNG or conventional oil. This flexibility results in approximately 20 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions and up to an 85 percent reduction in nitrogen oxides compared to oil-powered ships, marking a significant leap forward in reducing the environmental impact of global shipping.
Scheduled for its maiden voyage on a Far East-Europe route on April 18, this vessel is the first of four ordered by CMA CGM Group. To date, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has delivered 17 container ships to the group, including 12 dual-fuel vessels, reinforcing a longstanding partnership that is reshaping maritime logistics.
The launch of the CMA CGM SEINE is more than just a technical milestone—it echoes a bold step toward a greener and more interconnected future. For young global citizens, tech enthusiasts, and sustainability advocates, this achievement illustrates how innovative maritime design can drive real-world impact across international trade and environmental stewardship.
