The Chinese central government is set to reinvigorate urban landscapes in 2025 with a robust urban renewal plan aimed at addressing pressing public concerns and driving high-quality development. According to a recent Ministry of Finance announcement, key cities across different regions will benefit from this initiative, ensuring sustainable improvements in urban infrastructure.
The plan outlines fixed subsidies for selected cities, with up to 20 cities being chosen. Priority will be given to mega and super-large cities, as well as major metropolises located along key river basins, such as the Yellow River and the Pearl River. In the eastern region, each city can receive up to 800 million yuan (approximately $111.05 million); cities in the central region may obtain up to 1 billion yuan; and in the western region, along with municipalities directly under central government jurisdiction, the cap is set at 1.2 billion yuan.
These funds will be disbursed on an annual basis aligned with project progress, with an overall aim to modernize urban underground pipelines and upgrade infrastructure over the next three years. Improvements in domestic sewage collection and treatment will also play a vital role in enhancing living environments in older urban areas.
This comprehensive approach is not only expected to bridge significant infrastructure gaps but also to spur the construction of consumption-oriented facilities, reflecting the government’s commitment to creating more efficient, sustainable, and livable urban spaces.
